It's February: LOVE month! And today, I want to talk about a way to show yourself some love while you work.
A while back, I read about a service that would analyze you to find the right type of music for maximizing your focus and productivity. And while I didn't want to pay for the service, I thought it was a pretty intriguing idea. So I decided to do a little analysis myself. I paid attention to the kinds of music I own that really got me into the state of FLOW, where I'm absorbed in my work, highly productive, and the time flies by. I found that my brain really likes music that I would classify as "chill," in that the tempo isn't too fast and the song is positive sounding but not distracting. Lyrics don't bother me (even though lyrics are a no-go for some people). I then went through my music collection and gathered songs that met that criteria into my Work Chill playlist.
Now of course, I can't listen to music all the time when I work. For video and audio editing, music is right out (unless it's part of the project). And sometimes I have to talk to clients, too. But when I'm working away on a project that doesn't require audio input or output, turning on my tunes definitely increases the amount of work I get done and my wellbeing while I'm working.
So if you don't already know what kind of music really gets you into your groove or have a playlist or music channel of that music ready to go, show your brain some musical love this month. And you might just be surprised by the gifts of focus and productivity that your brain gives back.
